Ghizlan exhibits her art in the country of her birth and at the same hotel, La Mamounia, where her father Hassan El Glaoui also has a painting on display.
On a wonderfully warm and still October evening and set in the grounds of one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, was an art exhibition that captured the mood of its surroundings and the essence of Morocco itself.
The work on display consisted of a selection of newly commissioned Audrey’s Hat and Coco Chanel prints from A4 to A0 in size, and presented in the new RGB (Red, Green & Blue) lightboxes. Also on display were two Hombre & Mujer glass illuminations with stone bases and two Bridget Bardot glass illumination lightboxes.

As much as that sounds like a mouth full to say, this is actually a fact. Yes we have found some wall art which you and I can buy that shines a different shade depending on the light. Ghizlan El Glaoui - a Moroccan born painter is the brains behind it all, and following her quest to find the best light to enhance and give new dimension and perspective to her portraits, Ghizlan has begun working with a lighting designer to illuminate her pictures from behind in order to achieve an ever changing image. The distinctive bespoke frames are created by metal work artists.
She mixes warm and cold light within her artworks. For the transparency, crucial to her work, she uses modern metallic paint. Oils and traditional temperas achieve the contrasting opacity and texture.
Ghizlan El Glaoui’s work fuses the Moroccan and European influences of her upbringing. Her grandfather, the pasha of Marrakech, was both a powerful warlord and a noted art collector but it was her father, the world famous painter Hassan El Glaoui who sparked her interest in portraits.
For the transparency which is crucial to her work, she uses modern metallic paint and the contrasting opacity and texture is achieved by using oils and traditional temperas. Ghizlan’s work is available from the Keir Townsend showroom with prices ranging from £300 - £10,000.
"Ghizlan's paintings have truly brought sunshine into our showroom space. Bright, complex and unique colour schemes put together in a simultaneously naive and graceful way that only a Moroccan artist could do, bring back the happiest memories of my childhood in North Africa - the place that continues to be a source of great inspiration for my work. I would describe her style as a mix of Modigliani with Byzantine mosaics and a slight hint of pop art humour sprinkled on top. I think hers is the kind of art that would complement any type of interiors - residential or commercial. Her art lifts up the mood and I want to smile every time I look at her paintings."

Ghizlan held her first exhibition in Madrid in October. The setting for the event was truly amazing and the work on display utterly mesmerising. Her trademark illuminations gave incredible depth and ambience to the event. Ghizlan created a series of Man & Women (Hombre & Mujer) imagery especially for the show. An exclusive showcase of the latest collection of exquisite Bochic fine jewellery was held at the Glebe Garden Gallery recently. We felt especially privileged to welcome them to our cosy little gallery as they came to us before previewing it to Harrods! A collaboration of two understated artists who's mutual admiration for each others work prompted the event. David Joseph of Bochic www.bochic.com and Ghizlan El Glaoui www.ghizlanelglaoui.com painter and current owner of Glebe Garden Gallery.
On a lovely warm June evening last week the doors of the Glebe Garden Gallery in Chelsea were officially opened for an exclusive exhibition of Ghizlan El Glaoui's work. Champagne, beautifully presented Sushi, a pianist and an exquisite selection of Ghizlan latest work with it's unique trademark illumination, set the tone for a truly wonderful and memorable evening.
